2022-08-01

Prague, August 1st, 2022 – The latest aircraft developed by Czech manufacturer Aero Vodochody (Aero) can now be operated worldwide. The newly obtained unrestricted type certification for the Aero L-39NG trainer jet, which took more than 5 years, is the main requirement for aircraft registration by customers. The first production L-39NG is expected to fly by the end of 2022. Negotiations with more potential customers began at the recent Farnborough Airshow.

The Aero L-39NG is a modern, efficient, and effective jet trainer for full-scale training of pilots of modern air forces. The aircraft is the successor to the L-39C, which has been used to train thousands of professional pilots worldwide. "The newly obtained unrestricted type certification for the L-39NG confirms that this state-of-the-art aircraft outperforms its predecessor. All of us at Aero are confident that the L-39NG will be very successful in the future. This is positive news not only for Aero, but for the entire Czech aerospace industry, which is heavily involved in the development and production of the L-39NG," says Viktor Sotona, President and CEO of Aero Vodochody.

The Czech L-39NG jet trainer uses the latest production technologies and modern equipment. The aircraft's avionics is well suited for the training of pilots of fourth and fifth generation jets. The aircraft comes with a wide range of modern simulation technologies, including complete integration into a highly advanced tactical simulation center, increasing overall training effectiveness.

"L-39NG serial production is running at full speed. With the contracts we have already signed and the continued high interest in our trainer aircraft, our production capacity will be fully utilized at least until 2025. As of now, Aero is in advanced negotiations to deliver the L-39NG to several customers in Europe, Africa, and Asia. In addition, new dialogues with potential customers and partners commenced at the recently concluded Farnborough Air Show in the UK," says Filip Kulštrunk, Vice President Sales & Marketing at Aero Vodochody, adding: "Compared to competitors from Italy, South Korea or the USA, the L-39NG is a very affordable and, above all, long-term reliable multi-role solution for modern air forces. Completely new design elements allow the L-39NG to be continuously upgraded in accordance with customer requirements, especially at the level of communication and avionics systems. This is today critical for a successful long-term cooperation with national air forces."

Pilots appreciate the excellent view from the cockpit and the high level of protection in the event of an emergency landing or crash. This is due to the traditional robustness of the aircraft's design, which is based on the L-39. "The main advantages of the L-39NG are a completely new aircraft design in line with modern technologies (e.g., use of composite parts, wet wing, improved cabin view, central point refueling, etc.) and the highly reliable FJ44-4M engine. As a result, our aircraft achieves best in class operating costs, range and endurance," adds Jaromír Lang, Chief Designer of the L-39NG.

The certification of the Aero L-39NG is the result of more than five years of development and testing in several stages. The type certificate validates that the aircraft has been developed in accordance with all applicable aviation regulations and standards and is hence safe for standard flight operations. Any newly manufactured aircraft of this type can automatically be issued with a valid Certificate of Airworthiness, assigned a registration mark and be listed in the Air Registry.

The certification for the L-39NG was issued by the Military Aviation Authority (MAA-CZE) and is therefore fully compatible with all requirements and systems within the European Union and NATO. The certification has no time restriction and is valid for the entire production life of the L-39NG.

On the occasion of his visit to the Czech Republic, OMNIPOL's management welcomed, on the 11th of November, Kazakh Deputy Minister of Trade and Infrastructure Development Ruslan Baimishev, together with other representatives of the delegation. They assessed the current successful and developing cooperation between the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan. Also on the same day, representatives from Kazakhstan visited Aero Vodochody.

The delegation consisting of representatives from eight different ministries of Kazakhstan, plans to hold bilateral talks with representatives from the Czech Republic. OMNIPOL already has, very intensive trade cooperation, with this leading Central Asian country and is one of it’s main exporters.

Overhaul and modernization of the 4 L-39C aircraft were fully supported, in 2021, by the Aero Vodochody aircraft plant in the Czech Republic. The handover took place, successfully, at an Airbase in Kazakhstan. The contract also included, retraining of the Customer’s technicians and aviation personnel. The customer could then immediately start using the modernized aircraft to train new pilots.

Jiří Podpěra, President of OMNIPOL, said: "Kazakhstan has been our favorite customer for decades and we value each other. I firmly believe that the project to modernize L-39 aircraft not only for the Kazakh Air Force will continue in the coming years."

In addition to standard repairs as part of the Overhaul, Aero Vodochody also modernized the avionics on the Kazakh Aircraft. This modernization significantly facilitates the user's further transition, to the new L-39NG and moves the L-39 aircraft to standards that meet the training requirements for next-generation men and machines.

"As part of the modernization, we have integrated into the L-39 aircraft of the Air Force of Kazakhstan the main elements of the L-39NG standard avionics, such as the Vista head-up display from Speel Praha and the multifunctional displays of the American manufacturer Genesis Aero Systems," added Pavel Tůma, Vice President of Projects of Aero Vodochody.

Kazakhstan is a very demanding L-39 user, due to it’s extreme climatic conditions. Thanks to its, excellent technical and aviation properties, the L-39 aircraft fully meets these strict criteria. It is therefore able to operate successfully at huge temperature differences. In the past, Kazakhstan had three dozen L-39s delivered by OMNIPOL, in the 1970’s and 1980’s, via the then Soviet Union.

We are currently upgrading the L-39 in this configuration for other customers as well. Subsequent cooperation with business partners and comprehensive services are an integral part of our support to our customers.

“Českoslovenští letci, kteří bojovali s RAF v Boji o Británii a zbytku Druhé světové války byli proslulí svou statečností a svými dovednostmi,“ zmiňuje Plk. David Catmur, Britský přidělenec obrany v České republice. „Jejích britští kolegové je obdivovali a jejich nacističtí nepřátelé a okupanti se jich báli, zaslouží si náš obdiv a naše díky. Památník Okřídlený lev, který Britská komunita v České republice věnovala Praze byl vybudován, abychom na ně nikdy nezapomněli.

Nový dokumentární film „Nahoře i dole“, bude vyprávět příběh československých letců skrze dosud nespatřené archivní materiály. Film je produkovaný společností NOW Productions, získal podporu státního fondu kinematografie a v kinech bude v červnu 2022, poté bude uveden v České a Slovenské televizi na začátku roku 2023

Financing for the film is also being supported by the Winged Lion Memorial Appeal Fund, which raised money for the installation of the two-metre-high bronze statue in Prague’s Klarov area in 2014.

“The Winged Lion Memorial is a fitting tribute to the memory of these true heroes,” says Gordon Lovitt, Managing Director of NOW Productions. “Our film will bring the airmen’s tales vividly to life for a new generation by following their actions both in the skies and on the ground in Great Britain and across Europe. The story of the Czechoslovak airmen takes us on an Odyssean journey to both the Western and Eastern fronts of the war, while putting the humanity of these young men front and centre.”

The Winged Lion was financed by donations from British expat communities in the Czech and Slovak Republics who wished to express their gratitude for the pilots’ RAF service. It was unveiled in 2014 by Sir Nicholas Soames, a former British Member of Parliament and the grandson of Britain’s wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill.

This year’s commemorative event at the Winged Lion Memorial was attended by dignitaries including Petr Hejma, Mayor of Prague 1, Jan Chabr, a representative of the city of Prague, Antoni Wręga, Polish Charge D’affaires to the Czech Republic, and representatives from the British Embassy in Prague.

Never forgotten

The documentary film currently under production is the latest in a number of initiatives launched following the unveiling of the Winged Lion in 2014. An illustrated book was created telling their stories, while a major exhibition about the pilots entitled “Knights of Heaven” opened in Prague’s National Museum in June 2019. In November 2017, a plinth was unveiled below the Memorial bearing the names of all 2,513 airmen who fought with the RAF.

“The story of these brave Czechs and Slovaks is one of sacrifice, camaraderie, and extraordinary bravery,” says Major General Petr Mikulenka, Commander of the Czech Air Force. “While their homeland lay under Nazi oppression, they fought for its freedom from abroad. They never gave in. For this, we owe them our undying gratitude”.

Despite the slight delay that the project suffered, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The customer is very satisfied with the quality of work carried out on the aircraft after the overhaul and modernization. This marks the beginning of a new era of pilot training for the Kazakh Air Force. Thanks to the modernization of the aircraft, incorporating 21st century technology, the pilots now have an L39C that has moved to a fourth generation aircraft.

ERA has been awarded a contract for MasterCare support to prolong the best performance of its WAM system at Fujairah Airport in UAE

2021-03-10

The Wide Area Multilateration system deployed at Fujairah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates has recently been backed up by a newly signed contract of the MasterCare program of advanced assurance services.

The ERA WAM system for Fujairah Airport has been the first certified WAM system in the Middle East for ATC separation services in terminal and on-route airspace. ERA was awarded the contract for supplying the system in 2011 and it went operational in 2014. The ERA system has been chosen for the United Arab Emirates thanks to its ability to endure the severe weather conditions of the dusty environment and high outdoor temperature. The current implementation of the MasterCare program should ensure the top performance of the WAM Fujairah system under all operational capacities.

The Multi-sensor Surveillance System (MSS) for Fujairah WAM is part of the family of ERA’s worldwide tested and proven multilateration systems. It is based on distributed time architecture with GPS synchronization and its main goal has been to enhance the surveillance coverage of the airport Control Terminal Region up to 60 nautical miles.
The system consists of seven ground stations, each configured for a specific purpose: a receiver, interrogator, reference transponder, by selecting the required set of off-the-shelf modules.
ERA’s MSS ground station architecture is built to perform under harsh outdoor conditions, particularly high temperatures. The stations are also completely dust proof in order to withstand the typical local environment of hot dry deserts. All the electronic units are housed in metallic cabinets with an outstanding protection level which meet the IP67 protection standards.

MasterCare is a complete portfolio of services and a comprehensive range of assurance offerings that can be customized for each customer, deployment site and service level requirements. The United Arab Emirates, as a desert country, faces numerous harsh weather challenges and the surveillance system consequently has to be completely redundant. ERA guarantees the prevention of any possible unpleasant complications as well as maintenance on a high technical level throughout the life cycle.

About Fujairah International Airport

The L-39NG aircraft from AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE has received its type certificate

2020-09-18

AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE and its strategic partner OMNIPOL announced that the L-39NG aircraft has received its type certificate. Based on the positive results of ground and flight tests, the certification was issued by the Military Aviation Authority of the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic.

The new aircraft, which continues in the tradition of the legendary L-39 Albatros training aircraft, received its type certification less than two years after roll out of the first prototype.

The type certificate means that the aircraft is now eligible to operate in international air space and meets all safety requirements. It is also an important prerequisite for deliveries to customers. The L-39NG is one of the first military aircraft which has been certified to the new supranational military standards (EMAR 21 and EMACC), which means that its certification is recognized by all EU and NATO military authorities. The certification of the aircraft proceeded according to plan. As part of the tests, Aero performed about 300 test flights on two flying prototypes, and extensive ground tests on two static prototypes.

It is the completion of 13 years with Penta as the single shareholder of Aero Vodochody. "This is a turning point, an extraordinary success for Aero employees, which proves that bringing production of a new Czech designed and developed military aircraft back to Aero was the right decision. The current investment in the project has exceeded CZK 2 billion, and it represents the basis for a good future of the company,” said Marek Dospiva, co-owner of Penta Investments.

"This is great news for the L-39NG and for the entire Czech aviation industry. Receiving a type certificate is an important step in the development of the aircraft and at the same time, it is an important message for our customers. I would like to thank all those who contributed to this exceptional success," added Jiří Podpěra, President of Omnipol, which is the strategic partner in this new aircraft project.

“This milestone is our important news for the traditional NATO Days in Ostrava, as we promised it last year. The L-39NG is a completely new aircraft excelling all current and future requirements for modern training of pilots coupled with very competitive cost of ownership. We believe that the certification will significantly contribute to future orders, which we will be able to announce soon. My sincere thanks to all employees, suppliers and partners for their professional efforts and excellent collaboration," said Dieter John, President and CEO of Aero Vodochody.

The development of the aircraft does not end with obtaining a type certificate. Further improvements and expansion of capabilities according to customer requirements will be gradually added to the certification process.

The brand new L-39NG jet aircraft is a joint project of Aero Vodochody, its shareholder Penta Investments, and the OMNIPOL group, which is the strategic partner and equal co-owner of the L-39NG project. Based on an Agreement signed in June 2020, Penta Investments will hand over Aero Vodochody to its new owners, represented by OMNIPOL with 49% and Hungarian businessman András Tombor with 51%.

The L-39NG aircraft will once again be present at NATO Days. This time, both flight prototypes will appear – one on a static display in the VIP zone, the other at the beginning of Saturday's flight demonstration.

AERO Vodochody begins to write a new chapter with new owners

2020-06-11

“After thirteen years, AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE (Plc.) changes owner. The group of companies into which AERO Vodochody belongs, has been bought from the Penta Group by AERO Investment Partners Zrt, a company registered in Hungary. This is a joint venture between a Czech company AERO International, part of the OMNIPOL group and a renowned businessman from Hungary. The OMNIPOL group will be responsible for management of the new company.”

The signing of the contract on June 11, 2020 confirms the transfer of 100% of the shares of the holding owning Czech company AERO Vodochody to AERO Investment Partners Zrt. The majority of 51% of the shares of AERO Investment Partners Zrt. is owned by Hungarian businessman András Tombor with the remaining 49% of the shares being owned by the Czech company AERO International s.r.o.

The minority owner, AERO International s.r.o., is in the hands of Richard Háva and his family, which owns the OMNIPOL Group. The OMNIPOL Group will be responsible for the day to day management of the new company and will therefore be a guarantor of having experienced and professional managers running the business.

The company Airport Vodochody a.s., is not part of this transaction and will remain in the possession of the current owner Penta Investments. AERO's right to use the airport for its development stems from a contractual obligation agreed between the parties.

"AERO is one of the strongest Czech brands and a concept that rightly inspires national pride in many people. AERO not only has a great past, but above all also huge potential for the future. We want to build on the tradition of the company and restore its reputation on the Czech and world market. We will develop all three pillars of AERO's existing activities, namely, support for users of aircraft produced by the company, cooperation with the world's major aerospace manufacturers and, of course, the L-39NG project," says Richard Háva.

The OMNIPOL Group has a very long history with AERO, over the past decades it has been responsible for exporting almost all of the aircraft from its production lines. Since 2015, OMNIPOL has also been the strategic partner in the project for the next generation of L-39 aircraft: L-39NG. As a 50% shareholder of these projects, the group has already worked very closely with AERO over the past five years.

The new majority owner of the company, András Tombor is an experienced, regionally renowned businessman, who has a proven track record of many successful investments in various fields of the economy. The entry by such an investor into AERO will make a major contribution to the owners’ efforts to stabilize the company and secure its future developments.

"In our portfolio AERO was not one of the companies that we wanted to develop in the long term," said Marek Dospiva, co-owner of Penta Investments. Penta acquired AERO in a privatization tender in 2006, turning a company with a billion-dollar loss into a thriving company in less than two years. By fundamentally changing the strategy in 2016, it decided on AERO's return to the production of its own aircraft and to focus primarily on military programs.

ERA will provide an extension of its surveillance system for Jakarta airport in Indonesia

2020-02-18

The customer AIRNAV Indonesia has placed its trust in the ERA multilateration systems, ERA (the member of OMNIPOL Group) has recently signed a contract to extend its MLAT system with 12 new ground-based stations for surface guidance of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesian capital Jakarta. 32 ERA multi-sensor surveillance (MSS) GS and 213 pieces of SQUID vehicle tracking units are currently in operation to ensure the safety of the busiest airport in Indonesia.

The surveillance system need upgrades in order to accommodate the air traffic in Indonesia’s airspace, larger than the airspace in whole Europe. The airport often struggles to accommodate all flights at its current limit of 81 aircraft movements per hour. The extended system will cover the new terminal including buildings and aprons, new East Cross TWY and cargo apron area - in connection to the third runway, which went operational last August.

The ERA surface multilateration solution is capable of addressing the serious risk of runway incursions in critical areas. MSS provides the surveillance of aircraft required for advanced-surface movement guidance and control systems (A-SMGCS) to deliver safe and efficient operations.
ERA experts already carried out the site survey this January, the final round of testing SAT is planned for December 2020.

Eight years ago, the Indonesian airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II awarded the programme for safety to ERA as prime contractor in cooperation with Austrian company Avibit for the A-SMGCS integrating the MSS by ERA network of sensors and SQUID by ERA vehicle tracking units after an international tender. The system has been in successful operation ever since. There are also several other ERA systems functioning in Indonesia, one of them in the city of Medan.

On the Jakarta airport
The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is worldwide ranked no. 18 according to passenger traffic with 67 million passengers and about 500 000 aircraft movements per year. The airport is the main airport serving the greater Jakarta area on the island of Java, Indonesia. The airport is named after the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno, and the first vice-president, Mohammad Hatta. Indonesia with over 250 million in population is the new economic power house in Asia Pacific.

ERA is completing the extension of its surface guidance system at Barajas Airport in Madrid

2019-10-22

ERA (a member of OMNIPOL group) has recently signed a contract for Spanish ANS ENAIRE through the company SEAIRTECH and begun completing the extension of its surface guidance system at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport in Spain. The net of 46 upgraded surveillance ground-based stations is supposed to go operational next year.

In 2006, the Spanish civil aviation authority AENA awarded the safety programme for the capital’s airport to ERA company after an international tender, which then installed the network of multilateration sensors and SQUID with ERA vehicle tracking units. Since this time AENA has placed its trust in ERA several more times and ERA MLAT systems have been in successful operations at three other Spanish airports: Asturias Airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport and Tenerife North Airport on the Canary Islands.

ENAIRE currently requires improved airport surface surveillance in order to maintain a high level of safety for airport operations and reduce the risk of runway incursions. It must ensure a single-view of aircraft and vehicle movements over the complete surface coverage as backup in case of Tower management inability.

In order to meet the demands, ERA will upgrade HW and SW of its mature multi-sensor (composite MLAT and ADS-B) system, compliant with EUROCONTROL and ICAO requirements, as well as relocate several ground stations and add two central processing stations. The multilateration system will use a brand new measuring unit for its central time synchronization. The system is now undergoing Factory Acceptance Tests and will be ready for SAT in spring 2020.

The solution fused the highly accurate positional data from ERA’s ground-based stations and vehicle tracking units (131 pieces in operation at present with more coming) into one consistent traffic presentation.

ERA will also supply 113 new SQUID units serving as squitter beacons, all together to Madrid Barajas and other airports in Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona and Asturias.

On Madrid Barajas Airport

Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport is the second largest airport in Europe, in terms of physical size, behind Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. In 2018, 57.9 million passengers used Madrid–Barajas, making it the country's largest and busiest airport and Europe's sixth busiest. The airport has five passenger terminals, serves as the gateway to the Iberian Peninsula and is a particularly key link between Europe and Latin America. The airport’s original name derives from the adjacent district of Barajas and was renamed in 2014 after former Spanish Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez in recognition of Suárez's role in the restoration of democracy after the Franco era.

The new Czech jet aircraft L-39NG rolled out from the hangar to become the future reference for military pilots training

2018-10-12

On Friday 12th October 2018, at 11:50, the first L-39NG pre-series aircraft rolled out from the hangar at AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE, the leading Czech aerospace company. This significant milestone has been achieved in line with the L-39NG project schedule and Aero is now going to prepare the aircraft for its maiden flight planned before the end of this year.

The rollout event was attended, among others, by military officials from a number of nations, L-39NG customers, together with political and diplomatic delegations including the highest Czech political representative, the Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. “Aeronautics has always been strong tradition in the Czech Republic. The L-39NG project is demonstrating that industrial capabilities are still present in the Czech Republic. It is important that the Government supports this project, which will contribute to Czech export by high technological value. It strengthens competitiveness of Czech industry,” said Andrej Babiš, Czech Prime Minister.

Aero Vodochody is a company with historically the biggest production of light jets in Europe and one of the biggest in the World (total production of 6,700 jets). However, it has been more than 20 years since a brand new jet aircraft rolled out from the hangar. "When we bought Aero in 2006, the company was in a very bad shape, the development of our own aircraft was not realistic. We have set up a strategy where Aero has become a major subcontractor for Tier 1 aerospace companies. Nevertheless, at the same time we have kept the key people from the development team in order to maintain our know-how. Today, it is evident, that we have made a right decision,” said Marek Dospiva, partner of Penta Investments.

Since 2016, Aero has a strategic plan to reinforce its position as a leading producer of jet trainer and light attack aircraft. The next generation of the legendary L-39, the L-39NG, represents the key asset to achieve this target. “The L-39NG is defining the future of Czech aviation by taking the best from its tradition, bringing modern technology, and providing the best training and light attack solution available on the market. The L-39NG is already attracting a lot of international attention and customers and will definitely strengthen the customer community we already have,” said Giuseppe Giordo, President and CEO of Aero Vodochody.

The project of the new jet trainer is supported by the strategic partner, Czech military company Omnipol, “Today´s rollout is a major milestone for the L-39NG. Omnipol very proudly joined the L-39NG Project in the June of 2015 as the strategic partner and equal co-investor alongside our colleagues from Aero Vodochody.” said Jiří Podpěra, President of Omnipol.

The L-39NG is a jet trainer and light attack cost effective platform.  The L-39NG is a single-engine two-seater with staggered seating and an advanced cockpit design that includes full glass cockpit, a sophisticated on board virtual training system and a Helmet Mounted Display. The L-39NG is a key component of an innovative training concept developed by Aero that includes state-of-the-art ground-based training devices, new learning methods and environment and extensive use of Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence technologies. The L-39NG has been designed as a maintenance-friendly aircraft in anticipation of many decades of service.

The development of the L-39NG has accelerated in the last two years in order to be able to deliver the first aircraft to the market in 2020. In 2017, the initial pre-serial production and the industrialization phase started including agreements with all key suppliers and partners of the project – both international and Czech companies (about 40 Czech suppliers). The certification of the new avionics and engine installation was already done on the end of 2017, while the certification of the L-39NG will be fully achieved before the end of 2019.

Aero Vodochody estimates the potential demand in the next 10–15 years for trainer aircraft will be up to 3,000 pieces. Current training fleets around the world are rapidly ending their lifetime and do not respond to the future needs of pilots training for the 4th and 5th generation fighters. In conservative scenario, Aero expects to deliver 150 aircraft in the next 10 years.

Before the L-39NG rollout, representatives of 18 states where air forces have experience in operating legendary L-39 jet trainers met on the 3rd  L-39 Users’ Group Conference. Most of the attendees of the conference took this occasion to see the next generation of the aircraft based on the successful training platform on the rollout ceremony.

Era will introduce the passive multi-static radar SICORRA during NATO Days

2018-09-13

ERA, together with its parent company OMNIPOL, will proudly demonstrate the latest results of its research and development program at Ostrava's Leoš Janáček Airport this year. The second weekend of September will be a public display of airspace monitoring systems – specifically, the passive multistage SICORRA radar.

This system is a development stage step forward of MSPSR (MultiStatic Primary Tracking Radar) technology, which was introduced for the first time in 2013 by the Demonstrator Silent Guardian.

"Since then, the ERA development team has gained a lot of experience during a series of campaigns and military exercises, helping to come up with an even more advanced solution that the company now introduces under the name of SICORRA. I am convinced that this technology, combined with our other multilateral systems, such as VERA-NG, represents the future for airspace monitoring, "said ERA CEO Viktor Sotona.

Like a primary active radar, SICORRA's passive radar uses signals scattered by the reflection of targets, enabling it to accurately find and monitor even those who do don’t transmit anything. When compared with a classic radar; a reflection of its own transmitted signal is not required, instead, it just has to "parasite" the signals present within the environment, thus being completely passive and undetectable. This system, which has been developed by ERA, is based on commercial FM radio broadcast terrestrial broadcasting.

"The OMNIPOL Group has been supporting the research and development activities in the field of hi-tech defense technologies in the Czech Republic, particularly in the field of electronics. This further successful move by our subsidiary in the field of radar technology only confirms that we are going in the right direction. I believe that the new system is capable of becoming a valid part of the radar network for an overview of the situation in the airspace and hence the air defense, "said OMNIPOL President Jiří Podpěra.

ERA obtained Chinese Permit Certificate as the only foreign manufacturer of multilateration based systems

2018-06-15

ERA (a member of OMNIPOL group) is pleased to announce that CAAC China has issued the Permit Certificate which makes the company the only manufacturer with permission to deliver all airport surface, TMA and WAM surveillance systems and in addition vehicle tracking systems to Chinese ANS authorities.

Chinese CAAC has extremely straightforward regulations on what aviation systems can be used at any Chinese airport, stated by a strict process of certification. Only the leading technologies in the world are invited to apply for the Permit Certificate testing and only systems with a Permit Certificate are allowed to be delivered and installed in the country. ERA obtained this certificate at the end of April 2018.

The testing itself was very complicated and sophisticated. The entire process has been managed and approved by a committee of experts - a group of roughly ten specialists from different provinces of China. The certificate was awarded to ERA after a gruelling round of test evaluations consisting of factory tests and in situ tests of the system installed at the airport.

“Throughout the entire Permit Certificate testing process over the last 12 months, we experienced excellent co-operation between Air Traffic Control specialists from the Czech Republic and China,” stated Jimmy Chan, the participant of the specialist evaluation meetings.

As a result, ERA is the only manufacturer who is qualified to import multilateration systems and the only supplier who has a Permit Certificate on all ground, TMA and WAM systems. ERA also has the Permit Certificate for SQUID thus being the exclusive certified vendor of vehicle tracking transmitters. In addition, ERA helps CAAC establish standards for the multilateration technology used at Chinese airport as well as set up the Permit Certificate testing procedure in China.

“CAAC China hopes ERA can contribute more to air traffic safety in China in the future,” added Luo Ming Ju, the expert of China ATM.

Over the last decade ERA has already delivered four surveillance systems to Chinese airports: in Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha and Zhengzhou. ERA won the international tender last year to supply and install the fifth system at the “meant to be largest” airport in the world in in the Beijing southern quarter of Daxing.

ERA was awarded a contract to install its WAM system to cover the TMA of Sulaimaniyah Airport in Iraqi Kurdistan

2018-03-26

ERA (a member of OMNIPOL group) announced that it has been awarded a contract to implement a WAM and ATM system covering the Terminal Manoeuvring Area of Sulaimaniyah International Airport in Kurdistan, an autonomous region of the Republic of Iraq. ERA will deliver a composite multilateration and ADS-B system for surveillance of aircraft approaching the airport, covering the lower flight level to an extension of 50 NM.

ERA won the tender and will supply eight ground stations of its tried and tested MSS (Multi-sensor Surveillance System) and the ATM system ERIS. The contract was signed by the prime contractor, the company Waypoint and Kurdistan Regional Government in December 2017 as a result of a tendering process organized by the end user - Sulaimaniyah International Airport.

“This is an important project which ensures that Sulaimaniyah International Airport has the best available technology. The newly implemented multilateration system will operate independently without any support of traditional radar and is hereby a full-fledged replacement for the procedural air traffic management used until now,” stated Mr. Taher Abdallah, Director of Sulaimaniyah airport.

MSS by ERA is a modular system easily adaptable to any terminal and wide area requirements as well as all terrain challenges. Due to their resistance to adverse weather conditions, low power consumption and their minimal impact on the environment, the WAM sensors can be easily mounted in the Kurdistan mountains and will therefore be able to cover the TMA of the airport, which is located in the middle of the valley.

The team of ERA experts carried out a site survey and chose appropriate locations for the stations in January 2018. The Factory Acceptance Tests are planned for June 2018. The new equipment will be installed at the end of the year and is supposed to become operational in the first quarter of 2019.

Sulaimaniyah International Airport is a new airport established in 2005, located 15 kilometres outside the city of Sulaimaniyah, in Iraqi Kurdistan and has three terminals.

Kurdistan, literally "homeland of the Kurds" or Greater Kurdistan, is a roughly defined geo-cultural region where the Kurdish people form a prominent majority population and where their language, culture and national identity have historically been based. It encompasses the north-west Zagros and the eastern Taurus mountain ranges. Current use of the term refers to the following areas: south-east Turkey, northern Iraq, north-west Iran and northern Syria. Iraqi Kurdistan first gained autonomous status in a 1970 agreement with the Iraqi government, and its status was re-confirmed within the Federal Republic of Iraq in 2005.

Note for editors:

ERA a.s. is leading company in multilateration, multistatic surveillance, and reconnaissance technology. Unrivalled experience in passive surveillance sensor development provides ERA with unique know-how to deliver comprehensive solutions for global markets. We develop, manufacture and implement mission-critical systems for military and civil purposes.

Over last 2 decades ERA reached number of more than 100 installations, deployed in over 60 countries on 5 continents with 24/7 operations fulfilling demanding customer requirements. Nevertheless, more important that given number of references is the experience we have achieved and lessons learned during implementation of our solutions for air traffic control and management.

ERA has developed unique passive surveillance system VERA-NG that defines new sensor category DPET (Deployable Passive ESM Tracker) tailored for air, maritime and land target surveillance and reconnaissance for defence and electronic warfare purposes.

In parallel, ERA made air traffic control history when deployed the first multilateration system and introduced gate-to-gate surveillance. We intend to continue introducing new technologies to adapt to today´s and tomorrow´s challenges.

Giuseppe Giordo, the president and CEO of AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE appreciated the value of this meeting. “The legacy of the L-39 Albatros is a big commitment for us. We would be happy if this conference was a start of a long-lasting relationship with the users of this remarkable aircraft from all over the world. I believe together we can write the next successful chapter of this marvelous machine,” said Giordo.

The aim of the meeting was not only the celebration of past successes of the aircraft, but also the future outlook of the program. The attendees discussed the sustainment services and possible further development of the aircraft, but they have also been introduced to the project of a new military aircraft currently driven by AERO – the L-39NG. For current users of the L-39, AERO offers a smooth transition to the L-39NG conceived as a two-step process starting with the installation of a new engine and optional avionics into existing airframes and followed by the transition to the entirely new L-39NG airframe while using the previously acquired engine and avionics.

The conceptual and strategic approach of the OMNIPOL group is shown by its 50% share in the development of the next generation of the L-39 jet trainer. In this project OMNIPOL acts also as strategic business partner. It is no secret that the aircraft has a very successful past. Since 1971, when the first mass-produced Albatros (L-39 aircraft) was produced, almost 3,000 of them have been exported around the world. OMNIPOL CEO Michal Hon adds, “Business experience, contacts and long-term professional reliability are OMNIPOL’s strategic contributions to the L-39NG project. But they are not the only things. As we really believe in this project, we are contributing half the financing to its development.”

The conference was closed by a ceremony and flight display of aircraft made by Aero, including demonstrator of L-39NG, that has proven successful progress in the development of the new aircraft. Some of the delegations will attend also NATO Days & Czech Air Force Days, the biggest security show in Europe that takes place in Ostrava, Czech Republic on the weekend. Both Aero and OMNIPOL are partners of the show and the L-39NG will be promoted on a static display.

About the L-39

The L-39 and its successors L-59, L-139 and L-159 became the most successful jet training family worldwide ever. Over 3,000 aircraft of this type were manufactured up to now and the jet trainer has been historically used by 45 military operators. Today, the aircraft is operated also by civil customers in at least 15 countries. The L-39 proved its qualities in 15 aerobatic teams all over the world, 8 of them still active as of today. The L-39 family has a total log of over 5,000,000 flight hours with dozens of thousands of pilots trained on jets made in AERO. The aircraft became a legend not only because of its excellent manoeuvrability, but also for its ability to successfully complete missions in all climatic conditions.

About the L-39NG

The L-39NG (Next Generation) aircraft is a modern and effective trainer designed as a unified, comprehensive training system for modern air forces. The L-39NG is based on the aerodynamic concept of the current L-39, but utilizes the latest technologies and equipment. Power is provided by the highly modern FJ44-4M engine supplied with the TAP Blue engine support service to ensure unprecedented airworthiness and predictable maintenance costs. The aircraft's avionics are prepared to train future pilots of 4th and 5th generation aircraft and can be tailored to the customer's requirements to a great extent. The L-39NG is equipped with five mounting points for weapons. The aircraft also features a broad range of simulation technologies, including the integration into high-tech tactical simulation centres with the goal of increasing training efficiency. Aero and Omnipol Sign Partnership Agreement for the L-39NG Project

2016-04-05

AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE a.s. and OMNIPOL a.s. have signed an strategic partnership agreement regarding L-39NG aircraft sales. In the new agreement, Omnipol becomes Aero’s strategic sales partner for selected territories.

For both companies it’s a return to their historical roots - until 1990, Omnipol was the exclusive exporter of L-29, L-39, and other aircraft types, and it successfully exported over 9,000 Czechoslovak-produced aircraft. Ladislav Šimek, president of AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE, is certain this cooperation will lead to a significant increase in the sales potential of the L-39NG aircraft. “Given the fact that the L-39NG is the largest Czech military project of this century, it’s perfectly logical that the largest Czech producer of aviation and military technology would work together with the largest Czech dealer in military equipment. Our partner Omnipol is active commercially in over sixty countries worldwide, a significant portion of which operates L-39 aircraft,” added Šimek.

Omnipol CEO Michal Hon also sees the great potential of working together on the L-39NG project: “By expanding the spectrum of products and services we offer with the L-39NG-based training solution, we can now provide air forces around the world with a comprehensive package of services for training and tactical aviation, as we already complete logistics operations, for aviation as well as air defence and ground forces, for a number of our existing customers. The L-39NG is an extremely valuable export commodity for us. The aircraft has no direct competitor in its market segment, and furthermore, the worldwide fleet of training aircraft is due for a massive upgrade in the very near future.” The two companies will reveal the exact extent of the partnership at the Farnborough International Air Show in July of this year.

The L-39NG aircraft represents the most modern type of trainer produced by Aero, developed to offer air forces a technologically advanced alternative to operationally demanding and, for a wide variety of training tasks, inefficient competitive training types of the last generation. The L-39NG technology demonstration model with a new engine and avionics was flown in September 2015. The prototype of the newly-produced L-39NG aircraft, which will draw on the technological solutions proven on the demo model, should be ready to fly in September 2017. For existing users of the L-39, the transition to the L-39NG is conceived as a two-step process starting with upgrading existing aircraft with the new engine and optional avionics, followed by the transition to the entirely new L-39NG.

About Aero

AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE a.s. focuses on the design and manufacturing of military and civil aircraft and is the largest aviation manufacturer in the Czech Republic and one of the oldest aerospace companies in the world. Aero is a long-term partner to many of the world’s air forces. With over 6,000 aircraft delivered, Aero is historically the largest producer of jet trainer aircraft in the world. Its current focus is on the support of its final products, the L-39, L-59, and L-159 aircraft, and on the development of the new generation of its legendary jet trainer aircraft, the L-39NG. In the field of civil aviation, Aero partners with many of the world’s largest manufacturers in a diverse range of projects, including a number of risk-sharing programs.

About Omnipol

Since 1934, OMNIPOL, a.s. has been a reliable global systems integrator and supplier of military, security, and aviation systems. In addition to aviation technology and aviation training systems, Omnipol’s primary focus is on defence and security electronics. Omnipol initiated a new phase of its development when it purchased ERA, a.s., creating the conditions for the rapid development of a new generation of unique passive (invisible) tracking and recognition systems called VERA-NG. The system is complemented by other types of passive systems (such as SDD) and thereby offers a comprehensive solution for monitoring air, sea, and land space on the principle of “seeing without being seen”. Omnipol is also a supplier of technological production units and services for both the defence and food industries.
